Description

This azalea boasts a thick trunk and a low profile, resulting in a dignified and grounded appearance. This "low stance" is not easily achieved in azaleas; it is the result of years of careful cultivation, nurturing the tree's vitality and controlling its growth. It belongs to a rare lineage, with only five trees in Japan considered to be its siblings. It won the prestigious Grand Prize at the 37th Satsuki-ten Exhibition. This exceptional tree is the culmination of the meticulous work of the Waki family, spanning three generations.

Provenance

1960年代（昭和30年代後半）: 初代園主・和氣洋助により、元来1メートルを優に超える樹高を持つ素材を半分の大きさに切り詰め、作り直しを開始。日光の持つ力強い幹立ちを活かすべく、大胆な短縮から新たな樹作りが始まる。
1970年代〜1990年代: 長い年月をかけて切り戻し部分の傷跡を完全に治癒させることに成功。この間、正男も手入れに加わり、二代に渡る技術の蓄積が重ねられる。兄弟樹とされる樹は日本に五本のみという稀少な血脈を持つ。
2004年頃（平成16年）: 某愛好家の元に渡る。愛好家所有時も、和洋園との縁は途切れることなく、正男・佳洋が年1〜2回の定期手入れを継続。樹の骨格作りから枝棚の充実まで、一貫した方向性での育成が保たれる。
2020年頃（令和2年）: 和洋園が買い戻しを実現。以降、佳洋による専任の手入れが始まる。愛好家の元で培われた完成度をさらに高めるべく、最終仕上げの段階に入る。
2024年（令和6年）: 第37回皐樹展において、最高位たる皐樹展大賞を受賞。和氣三代、約60年に及ぶ技術の結晶が頂点を極める。

さつき盆栽は、季節ごとの手入れの「タイミング」で、樹姿と花の品格が大きく変わります。特に重要なのは、剪定の時期です。さつきは一般に夏（6〜7月頃）に翌年の花芽を形成するため、剪定は「花後できるだけ早く（主に6月）」に行うのが基本です。

和洋園の「預かりサービス」では、単に枯らさないための維持ではなく、花後剪定→夏の花芽形成→秋冬の樹勢維持という、さつきのサイクルに合わせて年間管理を組み立てます。到達したい姿を踏まえて、適期の作業を積み重ねていくのが特徴です。

年間管理スケジュール

春（芽動き〜開花）

芽出し管理（芽の整理・樹勢と枝数のバランス調整）
水管理（用土の状態に応じて調整）
