Description

Among the many Kozan bonsai trees, this is a rare and exceptional piece with an exceptionally thick trunk. It is extremely rare to see a Kozan with a more pronounced, shaped trunk than this. More than half a century of meticulous care has created this magnificent trunk and powerful tree character. It won the Tokyo Governor's Award at the 50th Japan Bonsai Style Exhibition. Winning this award at this exhibition, where craftsmen showcase their work to one another, is a testament not only to the perfection of the tree itself, but also to the precision of the craftsmanship of the three generations of the Waki family. This is a must-see piece that will reach even greater heights with further finishing cultivation.

Provenance

1965年（昭和45年）: 宇都宮市の某家より譲り受け、和洋園初代園主・和氣洋助によって園に植えつけられる。当時の樹高は160cm程。盆栽としての格を高めるべく、半分の高さへの大胆な切り戻しから作り直しが始まる。
2000年（平成12年）: 二代目園主・和氣正男に継承。露地に下ろし、大地の恵みを受けながらの長期培養を続ける。切り戻しの際の傷跡は時とともに完全に塞がり、幹の太さは当初の30cm程から倍以上にまで成長。ここから細やかな枝作りの段階に入る。
2019年（令和元年）　: 三代目・和氣佳洋が手入れを引き継ぐ。完成樹への仕上げに向け、長年の露地培養を経た本樹は、ついに鉢上げの段階を迎える。
2024年（令和6年）　: 第50回日本盆栽作風展において、東京都知事賞を受賞。和氣三代、約60年に及ぶ作出の到達点を示す一受賞となる。

数ある晃山の中でも、一際太い幹を持つ稀有な逸品です。模様木樹形の晃山として、これ以上の太さを見ることは極めて稀と言えます。半世紀を超える丹精が、この圧巻の幹味と力強い樹格を作り上げました。第50回日本盆栽作風展において東京都知事賞を受賞。職人たちが互いの仕事を見せ合うこの展覧会での受賞は、樹そのものの完成度に加え、和氣三代の手仕事の確かさを物語る証しと言えます。ここからの仕上げ培養で、更に高みへと向かう必見の一作です。

さつき盆栽は、季節ごとの手入れの「タイミング」で、樹姿と花の品格が大きく変わります。特に重要なのは、剪定の時期です。さつきは一般に夏（6〜7月頃）に翌年の花芽を形成するため、剪定は「花後できるだけ早く（主に6月）」に行うのが基本です。

和洋園の「預かりサービス」では、単に枯らさないための維持ではなく、花後剪定→夏の花芽形成→秋冬の樹勢維持という、さつきのサイクルに合わせて年間管理を組み立てます。到達したい姿を踏まえて、適期の作業を積み重ねていくのが特徴です。
